Volleyball stays hot with two Saturday victories

St. Thomas Volleyball pulled out a 3-2 victory over UW-Stevens Point Saturday morning at the UW-Whitewater tournament.

UST won 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12 and evened their season record in five-set matches to 1-1. Freshman hitter Fran Egan had three kills during a 7-2 run in the fifth set that built an 11-7 lead. Egan finished with 15 kills.

Madie Kroehler had 18 kills, 10 digs and five blocks. Katharine Mallak had 52 assists and 13 digs; Grace Bordson had 11 kills. four blocks and two aces; Julia Spacek had nine kills and six blocks; Ellie Meyer had 22 digs and two aces; and Abby Louwagie had 14 digs.

Coaxch Thanh Pham's team scored a 3-0 win over Luther to cap the tournament. The Toms won 25-12, 25-23, 25-16.

The Tommies (15-6) have won nine of the last 11 matches. Egan was named to the all-tournment team.

UST is home Wednesday night to face first-place and nationally-ranked Gustavus.


Friday story

No. 23-ranked UW-Whitewater pulled out a 3-1 comeback win over St. Thomas Volleyball Friday to open its two-day tournament. Whitewater (14-3) won 22-25. 25-23, 25-21, 25-23.

The Tommies bounced back with a 3-0 win over Wheaton (Ill.).

UST (13-6) plays UW-Stevens Point and Luther on Saturday to close out the event.

In the Wheaton match, Madie Kroehler had nine kills and 16 digs and Katharine Mallak added 32 assists.

Against Whitewater, Fran Egan, Audrey Erickson and Kroehler each recorded 11 kills, and Ellie Meyer had 32 digs.
