Freshman Selena Levendoski had a collegiate-best 17 kills and hit .571 to lead No. 18-ranked Tommie Volleyball to a 3-1 road win at Gustavus in MIAC play Wednesday night in St. Peter.
The Toms posted a 25-19, 25-22, 24-26, 25-21 victory to push their season win streak to six matches. That ended a five-match losing streak to Gustavus over the previous four seasons.
Coach Thanh Pham's Tommies (17-3 overall, 5-0 MIAC) moved alone into first place atop the league standings, just ahead of idle and No. 5-ranked St. Ben's (4-0).
The 17-3 record is the best 20-match start for a St. Thomas team since the 2013 Toms began that season 18-1 in a 30-3 finish.
St. Thomas overcame a gut punch late in set three but bounced back to claim the match. Leading 2-0 in sets, the Toms built a 24-17 lead in the third set and served match point before the Gusties (10-9, 3-2) reeled off nine consecutive points to win 26-24 and extend the match.
But Levendoski's six kills in the fourth set helped St. Thomas close out the victory.
Sophomore Grace Anetipa added 45 assists and 16 digs for the Purple. Freshman Kate Achenbach added 10 kills and hit .333; sophomore Fran Egan had nine kills; senior Hannah Braun chipped in eight kills and four blocks; and senior Ellie Meyer had 14 digs and two aces.
St. Thomas is home this Friday for home matches against Stevens (Mass.) at 3 p.m. and Northwestern-St. Paul at 7 p.m.
