No. 17-ranked Tommie Women's Cross Country opened its 2017 season Saturday and had four sophomores place in the top 10 to lead them to first place out of five teams at the Luther All-America Invite.
Katie Breuckman -- the team's No. 8 runner at the end of last season -- was the third collegian finisher in a field of 103 in 19:22 to lead Coach Joe Sweeney's team. Sara Ness placed seventh in 19:27; Jenny Launder was ninth in 19:48; and Becca Wilkin placed 10th in 19:49.
Five other Toms placed in the top 25: junior Bridget Schmitt (11th, 19:51; freshman Carly Scheuerman (13th, 19:56); senior Jenny Walz (17th, 20:03); sophomore Amber Matzoll (18th, 20:16); sophomore Molly Clarke (22nd, 20:25).
St. Thomas scored 42 points to top closest pursuers St. Ambrose (73) and St. Ben's (75).
The Toms will race Sept. 23 at the University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invite in Falcoln Heights.
