Baseball splits Sunday with Amherst

No. 2-ranked St. Thomas split a Sunday baseball twinbill with Amherst in Winter Haven, Fla. UST lost 3-1 in nine innings in game one, but came back to win the second game 8-1.
UST transfer Dominic Reed threw six no-hit innings in the opener but the game was knotted 1-1 into the seventh inning. Amherst pushed across a run in the top of the seventh and was one out from a victory when Anthony Winters stroked a game-tying solo home.
UST stranded two runners in the eighth inning with a chance to win, and the Jeffs scored twce in the top of the ninth en route to the victory.
Junior lefty Eric Veglahn took his first win of the season in game two. Freshman Hunter Hart hit a three-run home run to cap the scoring.
UST plays one game Monday vs. Union (N.Y.).
