With a national semifinal playoff spot on the line Saturday in Wheaton, Ill., No. 19-ranked Tommie Women's Soccer played No. 15-ranked Carnegie-Mellon to a 0-0 tie through regulation and through another 20 minutes of overtime.
A shootout tiebreaker was needed, and Carnegie-Mellon made its last five shots to escape with a 6-5 win through seven rounds.
St. Thomas (17-2-5) saw another excellent season end in the NCAA playoffs in frustrating fashion via a shootout. Coach Sheila McGill's team closed with a 17-game unbeaten streak (12-0-5).
The Toms recorded their 15th shutout of the season and allowed just 11 goals in 24 games. Carnegie had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks, but the Toms had a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal.
The Purple went 3-0-3 in postseason play, winning two shootouts and losing the third.
St. Thomas loses four seniors to graduation -- Elizabeth Luotto, Kaley Roberts, Lauren Wikstrom and Olivia Elvidge.
