Softball concludes Gopher Indoor Classic with two setbacks

3/12/2023 10:19:00 PM | Softball

Minneapolis, Minn. – St. Thomas Softball was defeated in both of their final games at the Gopher Indoor Classic by Central Michigan (8-5) in eight innings and by the hosting Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-0) in five innings.

Game One Recap
The Tommies jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning after Keira Murphy worked around a leadoff double in the top half. Avery Wukawitz, in her return to the starting lineup, began the Toms' first with a single to left-center field. Brooke Ellestad doubled to bring her home and the Purple ended the first up 1-0.

Central Michigan answered back for one run in the top of the second to tie. St. Thomas would quickly grab the lead back in the bottom frame.

Keira Murphy began the Tommies' rally with a well-struck double into the outfield. Freshmen Kameron Monson and Avery Wukawitz each walked to load the bases for Kaitlyn Raymond who walked home an RBI. Brooke Ellestad stepped up to the plate with two outs. The sophomore shortstop came through again with the bat. She dropped a two-strike single through the middle of the infield to bring around two more RBI and give the Tommies a 4-1 lead.

Both teams were kept off the scoreboard until the Chippewas scored a run in the top of the sixth. Kameron Monson of St. Thomas got the three-run lead right back when she unloaded on a ball and deposited it over the right field wall for her first career home run.

St. Thomas' defense had allowed just two runs through six innings, but Central Michigan's bats came alive at the right time. They homered twice in the top of the seventh with their backs against the wall to tie the game.

The Tommies got the winning run to second base with one out when Kaitlyn Raymond doubled to left field, but they could not bring the sophomore home.

Central Michigan struck quickly in the top of the eighth when (with the automatic runner on second) they hit their third home run of the day. The Chippewas added one more in the inning to bring the score up to 8-5.

St. Thomas' bats went quietly in the final frame.

Four Tommie hitters reached base twice in the ballgame: Kaitlyn Raymond, Kameron Monson, and Avery Wukawitz each with a hit and a walk and Brooke Ellestad with two base hits (RBI double, two-RBI single).

Game Two Recap
The Golden Gophers scored all eight of their runs in the five-inning winning effort in the first two innings. Seven of their eight runs came off home runs.

The Tommies first baserunner came in the top of the third when Sydney Mickett walked on five pitches. Their first hit came with two outs in the final frame when freshman Kameron Monson slapped one into center field. Quickly after Abbi Stierlen walked on four pitches.

St. Thomas did not make an error in the field.
