Softball drops first two games of Ole Miss Invitational
Oxford, Miss. – St. Thomas Softball fell in both Friday contests to begin the five-game Ole Miss Invitational by scores of 8-6 to Samford and 6-2 to Purdue.
Game One Recap
The Samford Bulldogs scored the game's first five runs: one in the first inning and four in the second.
The Tommies did not go away after two scoreless frames at the plate. Sydney Mickett got the offense started in the top of the third with a one-out walk.
Avery Wukawitz doubled her to third base and Brooke Ellestad walked on four straight pitches to load the bases.
Katie Goelz, the Tommies' senior first baseman, stepped up to the plate with two outs and runners on every base, she walked and brought around the Purple's first salvo. That was all St. Thomas got in the third inning.
After Isabelle True pitched a scoreless bottom half, it was time for the Tommies to get some back.
The top of the fourth began when Grace Bennett walked on four pitches. Coryn Jacobson smashed a ball into left-center field for a double, Bennett advanced to third.
Kameron Monson then put one through the left side of the infield to score Bennett and bring the Toms within three. Adrianna Young pinch ran for Jacobson at third and Kenzie Miller swapped in for Monson at first.
Young would score rather quickly on a wild pitch and Miller made it up to third on a throwing error.
Miller was thrown out at the plate on Sydney Mickett's chopper to first.
Avery Wukawitz shot a ball at high velocity directly into the opposing pitcher's glove and the Tommies had just one out left to work with.
Kaitlyn Raymond doubled into center field and Sydney Mickett came around to score from first. In what was a wild end to the Tommies' four-run tying rally, Brooke Ellestad reached on a dropped third strike and Raymond moved up to third. She then scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat to tie the game at five.
The Tommies surrendered three more runs in the bottom of what was an eventful fourth inning.
Their sixth run came in the fifth when Maddie Grad hit one over the fence for her first home run of the season.
Grace Bennett tossed three innings in relief, allowed just two hits, did not allow a non-inherited runner to score, and finished with two strikeouts.
Game Two Recap
The game did not see its first run until the third inning when Purdue grabbed three. The Boilermakers then doubled their lead in the fourth striking for three more.
St. Thomas was held scoreless until the top of the sixth. The Tommies scored two runs with two outs after Kameron Monson led off the inning with her second hit of the game, a double. Monson was substituted out for a pinch runner, Anna Caruso.
Brooke Ellestad brought the freshman home on a single up the middle. Kenzie Miller made her second appearance of the day on the bases when she came in for Ellestad.
Katie Goelz dropped one into the left field grass to move Miller to second. Maddie Grad brought Miller around to score but was thrown out attempting to take second on the play.
The Tommies had eight hits in the game and no walks. They committed five errors in the field.
