Pitching sharp as Baseball gets key sweep

The No. 17-ranked Tommies used strong pitching and defense to power a 7-1, 3-0 sweep over second-place Gustavus in MIAC baseball Tuesday in St. Peter.
St. Thomas (23-7 overall, 12-2 MIAC), which has three MIAC doubleheaders left, has a 1 1-2-game lead over second-place St. Olaf (11-4) with six days to go in the regular season. Gustavus (18-13, 10-5) has lost five of its last six MIAC games after a 9-0 start.
UST senior Lonnie Robinson allowed one run on two walks and six singles and struck out eight for the complete-game victory in game one. Matt Schuld and Erik Olson combined on a seven-hit shutout in game two. Leading just 1-0, Olson got two strikeouts with the bases loaded to end a fifth-inning threat.
The Toms had no errors on the day and stranded 10 Gustie runners in game two.
For UST, Matt Pexa and Tom Wippler had three hits on the day, and Dan Leslie had two hits and three runs.
The Tommies broke a 1-1 tie in the opener with four runs in the sixth inning, and added two runs in the seventh. Game two was just 1-0 until UST added two seventh-inning runs.
The Toms have three doubeleaheders to go as they chase an unprecedented sixth consecutive MIAC title -- Thursday at Augsburg (2:30 p.m. at Minneapolis' Parade Stadium; vs. Carleton Saturday at home (1 p.m.); and next Monday at Concordia-Moorhead (1 p.m.)
