Carpenter's game-winner in 12th lifts Baseball in split

5/3/2015 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Ben Carpenter's two-out walk-off single in the 12th inning lifted St. Thomas to a 4-3 win over Augsburg in game one of Sunday's MIAC baseball doubleheader at Koch Diamond.

Augsburg held off a late charge and won game two 5-4. The last three innings were completed on Monday after rain and lighning on Sinday evening.

UST trailed 5-2 but got one tun in the fifth on a Brady Johnson double and Ben Waltz single. UST had first and third with one out but hit into an inning-ending double play. The Toms pulled within 5-4 in the sixth on a leadoff, pinch-hit home run by freshman Ryan Zimmerman.

Game one lasted 3:30 on the clock through 12 innings.

UST junior RHP Matt Behounek retired all six batters he faced, three by strikeout, to get the game-one mound victory. Junior LHP Eric Veglahn started and threw five shutout innings. Sophomore RHP Bill Ferderer allowed no runs in 4 1-3 innings of relief.

Trailing 2-0, Augsburg scored three runs after two were out in the sixth on a double, two hit batters, a squib roller toward third that drove in one run, and a wild pitch that caromed behind home and scored two runs.

Brady Johnson's infield single with two outs in the seventh scored the tying run. Johnson dove into first and just beat the throw by Auggie shortstop Gordon Kappers.

In the 12th, one-out singles by Johnson and Ben Waltz put the lead runner in scoring position. After a fly out, Carpenter's liner over third base plated Johnson from second base.

Johnson also had an RBI triple in the first inning and went 3-for-6 in the game.

UST improved to 5-1-1 this season in extra-inning contests.

In game two, two Augsburg runs have scored on wild pitches and a third on a solo home run by Jack Duffy. The two UST runs have scored on a Ben Waltz sacrifice fly and a Carpenter two-out single.

The Tommies had already secured a conference playoff spot and the No. 4 seed for the May 8-10 double-elimination tourney.

St. Thomas (21-14-1 overall, 11-7 MIAC) wrapped up the final playoff spot on Saturday night when fifth-place St. Mary's lost 7-5 and 8-5 to Bethel to drop to 9-9.

Johnson had five hits on the doubleheader to lead UST.
