ST. PAUL - St. Thomas men's soccer closed out opening weekend with a third consecutive win on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the University of Northwestern 6-0 at South Field. The Tommies took a 2-0 lead into halftime and opened up the offense from there, improving to 3-0-0 on the year, while the Eagles drop to 1-1-1.
Northwestern opened the game with two of the first three shots of the game, but St. Thomas answered with a flurry of chances midway through the half.
Back-to-back shots from Christian Elliehausen and Justin Oliver got the chances going for the Purple. The pair of opportunities led to five corner kicks and three shots in a 15-minute span.
After the early opportunities went awry, the Tommies finally got on the scoreboard when senior Alex Schnobrich put away his first goal of the season. Tyler Oliver did the dirty work and found Schnobrich waiting at the 18 with an open look at the net that he did not let go to waste to put UST on top with just under 12 minutes to play in the opening frame.
Three minutes later, Oliver assisted on another goal, this time to his twin brother, Justin. Tyler sent the ball forward to a cutting Justin, who took three touches and snuck it past Northwestern keeper Turner Main to give the Tommies a 2-0 lead headed to the half.
Ten minutes after the intermission, St. Thomas put up two more goals in a three minute stretch. Justin Oliver struck again, this time with an assist from freshman Jonathan Acevedo for his fourth goal in three games since joining the Tommies this season.
Freshman Lucas Horton got into the scoring act in the 68th minute. Fellow freshman Jacob Makela sent a beautiful cross all the way across the box to a waiting Horton on the back post. Horton put it away to notch his first career goal and give the Tommies a 4-0 lead.
Seniors Kevin Van Lieshout and Paul Gwidt each put home their first goals of the year to add insurance in the final 15 minutes to give the Purple the six-goal win.
St. Thomas outshot the Eagles by a total of 22-4, including a 12-3 edge on goal. The Tommies also recorded a 14-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Sophomore Aidan Hogan made three stops to record his second shutout of the year and improves to 3-0-0. Turner Main was tagged with the loss in a five-save effort for the Eagles.
The Tommies will now go on the road for the first time this season with back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday night at Capital and Ohio Wesleyan, respectively.
