Women's Hockey opens season with 5-2 win at St. Ben's

2/14/2021 7:54:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Maddy Fiedler scored a goal and an assist and five Tommies contributed the team's five goals to lead St. Thomas in Sunday night's 5-2 conference road victory over St. Ben's.

It was the Tommies' first game of the 2020-21 season, first MIAC clash and first competition in 353 days since a season-ending MIAC playoff loss last Feb. 27.

Junior Eryn Cooley stopped 19 of 21 shots for St. Thomas (1-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC), which never trailed.

The five-goal output marked the most scoring by a St. Thomas women's team in a season-opening game in 13 seasons.

Anna Solheim's goal in the final 32 seconds of the second period broke a 2-2 tie. Alyssa Wallace and freshman Isabel Lippai scored insurance goals 1:44 apart in the third period.

Fiedler and Estee Frantz scored 1:48 apart in the game's first 5:00 for a 2-0 lead, but the Bennies (0-2, 0-1) scored in the first frame and again early in period two to knot the score.

The Purple's Fiona Claugherty and Lauren Einan contributed two assists in their collegiate debuts.

St. Thomas is scheduled to play two non-conference home games this week in Mendota Heights: Wednesday vs. Hamline (7:30 p.m.), and Friday against St. Ben's (7 p.m.).
