St. Paul, Minn. - Tommie Women's Soccer put up a barrage of second-half shots but came away with a 0-0 draw against the University of Idaho Thursday at South Field.
The Purple (2-1-1) finished the game with 17 shots, including 14 coming in the second half. The Vandals (2-1-1), a 10-win team a season ago, recorded just seven shots through 90 minutes. In the first half, Idaho had four shots, one on goal, and four corner kicks, while St. Thomas had three shots and one corner kick.
St. Thomas' best scoring chance came in the 71st minute by freshman McKenna Lehman as a far shot clanged the top of the goal before bouncing back into play. Lehman's post shot was one of five by the Tommies within a three-minute span.
Sophomore goalkeeper Annie Bantner played the entire 90-minute game in the goal, making one save on seven shots faced. The Tommie defense had allowed just one goal in four games.
The tie helped St. Thomas avenge a 3-2 overtime loss to Idaho on the road in 2021.
Quoting Tommie Coach Sheila McGill
"We knew they were going to come out strong, they like to come out and play super fast against everybody, so we knew we would have to weather the storm a little bit. We had to play smart. In the long run it ended up being our game where we were able to possess the ball and they didn't have the legs left to try and fight for it. It created a lot of (scoring) opportunities.
"Considering this game was a loss for us last year, we're proud of what we did, proud of our grit. We were able to get deeper into our bench again and get some really good performances from our new players.
"We have had some positive results already this season. Even though the Green Bay game doesn't count (game halted with 2-0 Tommie lead in second half), it's a big result because we lost to them last year. We lost to Drake last year. So this was a big step in the right direction of being more competitive faster. I think that's the growth in the team that's happening."
