Late rally from Softball comes up short

2/18/2024 1:50:00 PM | Softball

The Tommies scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to halve Virginia’s late lead but ultimately fell 9-3.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of St. Thomas Softball team (1-9) comes away from the Easton Bama Bash with one win in five games after falling to the Virginia Cavaliers (6-4) 9-3 on an early Sunday afternoon.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Tommies rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning after Virginia tacked onto their first inning 2-0 lead with four in the top half of the sixth. Kaitlyn Raymond led off the productive frame with a single to flip the order to the top of St. Thomas' lineup. Avery Wukawitz moved her up to second with a single of her own.

Laken Lienhard was due up next with a chance to reel in the Cavaliers and she did just that. The junior transfer rifled a well-struck ball to right center field, both Raymond and the speedy Wukawitz scored on the play. It was Lienhard's first extra base hit as a Tommie. After the Tommies hit into two outs in the inning Morgan Klein kept the rally going with a two-out RBI single to right field.

Unfortunately for the Tommies Virginia added three more runs in the seventh and kept them off the scoreboard with a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning.

Ella Cook settled things down for the Toms after giving up a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. She pitched four consecutive scoreless frames before allowing four more runs in the top of the sixth.

Six different Tommies hit safely in the ballgame; Lienhard's sixth inning double was the only extra base hit on the day for the Purple.

UP NEXT
St. Thomas heads down to Texas A&M for a five-game invitational against Southeastern Louisiana, Texas A&M, and University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA). They play two games on Friday and Saturday and wrap things up with one game on Sunday against the Roadrunnners of UTSA.
