Anya Schmidt led St. Thomas with 14 kills to end non-conference schedule at Northwestern Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. – The seven-match winning streak of St. Thomas volleyball came to an end Friday as Campbell came away with a 3-0 win (21-25, 21-25, 11-25) to close out the Tommies' time at the Northwestern Tournament in Evanston, Ill. Freshman outside hitter Anya Schmidt led the Tommies (7-4) with 14 kills on a .313 attack percentage as the Purple closed out non-conference play.

SCORING SUMMARY
Set One: The Tommies overtook an early Camels lead before the teams battled evenly to an 18–18 tie, paced by four kills from Schmidt and five digs from senior libero Ella Voegele through the set. Campbell responded with a decisive 4-0 run to create separation and closed out the frame 25-21 despite the Tommies' strong defensive effort.

Set Two: St. Thomas, unable to hold a lead in set two, again stayed within striking distance, pulling even at 15-15. Kills from junior outside hitter Ellie Gustafson, Schmidt, and senior opposite hitter Tezra Rudzitis fueled a late push, but Campbell held on after a mid-set run provided the cushion. Schmidt led the Tommies with six kills and four digs in the set.

Set Three: The Tommies trailed just 5-3 before Campbell strung together a 5-0 run to take control. Schmidt added four more kills, but the Tommies hit .162 compared to .548 for the Camels over the final set to fall in a sweep.

TOMMIE TIDBITS
·       St. Thomas' Division I-era best seven-match winning streak comes to an end. The previous longest winning streak of five matches came to end the 2024 non-conference schedule. Over the past two seasons, the Tommies are 13-7 during non-conference tournaments and 13-8 during all non-conference matches during that time.
·       A night removed from the team's best hitting percentage of the season, the Tommies totaled a .177 hitting percentage from the floor against the Camels to tie for the second lowest of the season. Campbell totaled eight service aces to St. Thomas' one while the Camels recorded nine blocks compared to five for the Tommies.
·       Freshman Anya Schmidt finished with a team- and career-high 14 kills on a .313 hitting percentage, also a career high, adding 8 digs and 1 block. Senior Tezra Rudzitis followed Schmidt with eight kills on a .353 hitting percentage.
·       Schmidt tied for the team lead in digs along with senior Ella Voegele and junior Morgan Kealy, who lead the team with 26 assists.

QUOTEABLES
Head Coach Thanh Pham's thoughts following the Tommies' loss to end the Northwestern Tournament
"Campbell was a very god team with strong serving and passing. We were never really able to get comfortable or run our offense. We can learn a lot from that match and will implement those lessons in practice as we prepare for conference."
