Softball sports tremendous individual performances in San Diego split

3/22/2023 10:27:00 PM | Softball

San Diego, Cali. – The St. Thomas softball team rode multiple career-best performances to a split in two tight games on the road against the San Diego Toreros losing in game one, 2-0 and coming out on top in game two, 4-3.

Game One Recap
The opening three innings were a defensive affair for both sides. Sydney Mickett's two-out third inning single was the only baserunner the Tommies could muster in the first three frames.

Their offensive struggles were lessened by the fact Isabelle True was nearly perfect through the first 10 batters she faced in the circle.

The senior retired the first five Torero hitters that entered the batter's box. True issued a two-out walk in the bottom of the second and then sent back the next four hitters to the San Diego bench.

True was relieved in the fourth inning by Ella Cook who was making her first appearance in nearly a month. The sophomore battled hard but did surrender the game's only two runs in the bottom of the fourth one of which scored on a delayed steal of home.

After a scoreless fifth from Cook, True reentered the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth. She allowed just one hit while posting her fourth scoreless frame of the game.

True finished with four innings pitched, she allowed no runs to cross, walked just one batter, and gave up one base hit.

Five Tommie hitters finished with one hit. Maddie Grad, Morgan Klein, and Sydney Mickett each singled while Kaitlyn Raymond and Coryn Jacobson tallied doubles.

Game Two Recap
The Tommies' bats were kept quiet once more until the fifth and sixth innings rolled around.

Finding her team down one run in the top of the fifth, Avery Wukawitz stepped up to the plate with one out and Katie Goelz standing on second base.

The freshman outfielder found a pitch she liked and blasted it over the tall left field fence to give the Tommies a 2-1 lead late in the game. The home run was the first of her young career.

Keira Murphy went back out into the circle in the bottom of the fifth now pitching with a lead. She sent down the Toreros in order. The freshman arm pitched her team-leading fourth complete game of the season while allowing just three runs and dancing around ten hits. Five of her seven innings toeing the rubber resulted in zero runs for the opposition.

After Murphy's clean fifth, Wukawitz again found herself in a fantastic spot to lead her team to victory. This time the Stillwater native was at the plate with two outs and Morgan Klein on second and Katie Goelz on first. She went the other way with the ball and deposited a triple deep into the right field corner. The hit scored both of her teammates and propelled the Tommies to victory.

San Diego made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh when they scored two, brought the tying run to third and the winning run up to bat with one out remaining. Murphy induced a hard grounder to Brooke Ellestad at shortstop and the sophomore rifled the game's final out into Katie Goelz' glove at first.

Avery Wukawitz shined brightest in the win with her four RBI, triple, and home run but she was surrounded by an essential supporting cast.
