Toms lose two offensive shootouts In the desert
2/9/2024 11:04:00 PM | Softball
The Tommies fell to both the Boise State Broncos and Arizona State Sun Devils by scores of 7-4 and 9-4 respectively.
TEMPE, Ariz. – St. Thomas Softball (0-2) could not hold down the offenses of Boise State (2-0) and Arizona State (1-1) on the first day of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona.
GAME ONE RECAP
Sophomore Morgan Klein got the starting nod in game one of 2024 and promptly found herself in a sticky situation. She had given up back-to-back extra-base hits and one run to lead off the ballgame. She buckled down and stranded the Bronco runner at second.
The Toms' first strike on offense came in the bottom of the second inning. Klein led off the inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Kenzie Miller roped the first home run of her career to put St. Thomas out in front 3-1.
More offense came in the third inning for the Purple. Avery Wukawitz started things off with a double and then scored on a Cassidy Carby one-out single.
Morgan Klein was pulled from the circle, with the lead, before the fourth inning. The sophomore pitched three innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and one strikeout. Christina Crawford came on to relieve Klein and promptly struck out the side in the fourth.
The top of the fifth was not as smooth for the redshirt-sophomore. Crawford allowed a lead-off single and a one-out single. The Toms recorded a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. With two outs and two runners on Laken Lienhard had trouble with a ball to shortstop. Her fielding error led to a Boise State run. A dangerous Bronco offense that hit 81 home runs last season pounced on the mistake with a three-run shot. Boise State took the lead, 5-4.
The final 13 batters for St. Thomas were retired in order as the Broncos added two runs in the seventh and handed the Toms their first loss of the season, 7-4.
GAME TWO RECAP
Three Tommies recorded multi-hit games, but they were outgunned by a high-powered Arizona State offense that unloaded for nine runs. Avery Wukawitz (2-3, 2B, SB, BB), Morgan Klein (2-3, BB, R), and Ella Cook (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI) accounted for six of the Toms' eight hits in the game-two loss.
Ella Cook's first-inning two RBI double gave the Toms' the lead, but it was short lived as Arizona State answered back for three runs in the bottom of the frame.
The Sun Devils added two in the third and two more in the fourth to lead 7-2.
Cook came through again, this time with an RBI single to score Laken Lienhard. Adrianna Young flew out to right field and Cassidy Carby tagged up and scored. Three runs were as close as the Toms could get.
Arizona State scored two more in the bottom of the fifth, the final counterpunch to put the Purple away.
