Men’s Hockey cools off with loss at Air Force

Gaffney and Giuliani scored in the 6-2 loss
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (2-3-0) had bountiful opportunities on Saturday night but, unlike Friday, the puck evaded the back of the net against Air Force netminder, Carter Clafton and the Falcons (1-2-1) in a 6-2 defeat at Cadet Ice Arena.
Period Summary
First Period
-Alex Gaffney picked up where he left off, with a power play goal to open the scoring at 11:50 from Nick Williams and Casy Laylin. Gaffney's goal was his team-leading fourth goal and ninth point, it was also his third power play goal in five games.
-The Falcons answered back at 15:58 and got a puck by Tommie goaltender, Carsen Musser.
-The Toms outshot Air Force 10-7 in the first period and won an astounding 15 of the 18 faceoffs, they dominated much of the opening frame but failed to capitalize.
Second Period
-The game completely turned on its head in the second period as Air Force outshot the Purple, 14-5 and scored three goals to take the lead.
-The Falcons notched tallies at 11:12, 13:01, and 18:11.
Third Period
-St. Thomas came out of the second intermission flying and controlled the action in the third, but for Josh Giuliani's goal at 3:31, failed to mount a comeback.
-Giuliani scored his third of the series (and of his career) from Chase Cheslock and Colton Jamieson.
-The Toms hit a pair of pipes in the frame (Nathan Pilling and Luc Laylin) and outshot the Falcons, 12-8.
-Air Force scored two empty net goals at 17:21 and 18:58 to seal their first victory.
Quick Hits
-Air Force put more shots on goal, 29-27, and tallied 22 blocks in the victory.
-The Tommies were tremendous on the dot with a .581 faceoff percentage (43-31).
-St. Thomas scored one power play goal; they have now scored at least one power play goal in every game this season. They were also 4-4 on the penalty kill.
-Alex Gaffney is on a five game point streak to begin 2025-26, his nine points are the most in the CCHA.
