Men’s Hockey drops CCHA opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (2-5-1, 0-1-0 CCHA) could not hold on to its early lead on Friday night against #18 Minnesota State (4-1-2, 1-0-0) at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena to open CCHA play. The Mavericks scored a trio of third period goals to comeback and down the Tommies.
Period Summary
First Period
-Nathan Pilling won the opening faceoff, the first of his game-leading 13 wins on the dot.
-St. Thomas controlled the pace of play in the first and outshot the Mavericks 12-6 in dominant fashion.
-The Tommies killed off the only penalty of the period, a Lucas Wahlin high-sticking minor at 9:24.
-The lone tally of the frame came from Luc Laylin at 13:59. The older of the Laylin brothers tipped home a Hayes Hundley point shot for his third goal of the season. Hundley received the puck on a Bauer Berry pass. It was the first goal this season assisted by the dynamic defensive duo of Hundley and Berry.
-Will Ingemann made his first collegiate start in goal for the Tommies and made all six saves in the first 20 minutes.
Second Period
-Berry got caught up in a pair of unfortunate spots and earned two minor penalties. First for a rough in the neutral zone at 5:28 and then a hook at 9:17 shortly after returning to the ice.
-The Tommies killed off the first Bauer minor and then had an opportunity to skate 4-on-4 at 10:26 before coming up empty on their only power play chance of the night (69 seconds worth).
-The period's first shot on goal did not come until the fifth minute, and just 10 were placed on frame the entire second (6 for UST).
Third Period
-Mankato scored their first goal of the night to tie it up at 1:32 and then took the lead at 12:17. The Maverick's first goal came on their 12th shot of the night to break up the shutout bid for the freshman netminder.
-Coach Blasi pulled Ingemann with just over two minutes to play. The Tommies got one shot on goal before MSU potted an empty net goal at 19:00.
-Mankato outshot St. Thomas 12-7 in the final frame and were the beneficiary of two more Tommie minor penalties, a Quinton Pepper hook at 2:43 and a Bauer Berry trip at 9:56.
-The Tommie penalty kill did not have any shorthanded chances but did kill off all five Maverick power plays.
