Tommies split with preseason Summit League favorites

3/22/2025 6:04:00 PM | Softball

Softball bounced back with a 1-0 victory in game two over the Omaha Mavericks

OMAHA, Neb. – St. Thomas Softball (15-10 overall, 1-1 Summit League) got back on track with a split with the red-hot Omaha Mavericks (20-6, 1-1) to open conference play on Saturday afternoon at Connie Claussen Field. The Tommies dropped game one 5-1 but answered with an Ella Cook complete game shutout in a 1-0 game two victory, their first win in program history on the road against Omaha.

Game One Recap
The first Summit League game of the season began as a pitchers' duel but ended with an Omaha power surge. Christina Crawford for the Tommies and Maddia Groff for the Mavericks each went the length of the game on Saturday afternoon.

Through the first two innings, neither pitcher allowed a run. Crawford ran into trouble in the third inning when she allowed a two-out single, RBI double, and RBI single. The Mavericks took their two-run lead and doubled it in the following frame with a two-run home run.

St. Thomas got its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after Kameron Monson smashed a first-pitch riser into left center field for a double. Miley Wichman pinch ran for Monson and Avery Wukawitz singled her home.

The Mavericks added their final run of the contest on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. The Toms went down quietly in the top of the seventh.

Crawford went six innings and struck out eight. All five of the runs allowed were earned. Ella Cook's program-best 23-game on-base streak came to an end after her 0-3 performance.

Game Two Recap
Cook tossed seven lights out frames in game two and earned the complete game victory. She allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out five, including the final hitter of the game. It was the second complete game shutout of the season for Cook and the fifth on the year for the Tommies' pitching staff, a program-best.

Cook walked the tight rope through four innings in a scoreless tie before the Toms' bats pushed a run across in the top of the fifth. Adrianna Young led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Zoe Trotter came in to pinch run for Young and then stole second base with one out in the frame. After she advanced to third on a wild pitch, Trotter tagged up and scored on a deep fly ball to right center field off the bat of Avery Wukawitz

Laken Lienhard was the only Tommie with a two-hit game and also had the only non-single of the game (2B). Wukawitz, Cassidy Carby, Kameron Monson, and Adrianna Young all recorded singles. Kaitlyn Raymond drew a pair of walks in the late afternoon battle. Wukawitz, Raymond, and Zoe Trotter each stole one base as well.
