Women’s Soccer opens Summit League play with trip to South Dakota to face Jackrabbits and Coyotes

Tommies begin conference play with back-to-back road games
ST. PAUL, MINN.- St. Thomas women's soccer will begin conference play with a 3-4-1 overall record and coming off a 2-0 victory over Western Illinois. The Tommies are looking to carry that momentum into conference play.
The Purple held a 1-5-2 conference, with their lone win being at home against Kansas City. Seniors Tatum Trettel and Sophia Barjesteh recorded assists in the 1-0 victory over the Roos.
Western Illinois Recap
The Tommies finished the non-conference portion of the schedule on a high note with the 2-0 victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks.
Sophia Barjesteh got the scoring started at 18 minutes off an assist from Maddie Nelson. This was Barjesteh's second goal of the season and Nelson's first assist of her collegiate career.
Emily McCarthy put the Tommies up 2-0 40 minutes into the contest unassisted. This goal was the first of McCarthy's collegiate career.

Scouting the Jackrabbits
The Jackrabbits are off to a hot start to the 2025 season and currently hold a 6-1-3 overall record. The Jackrabbits lone loss came back on August 17th to the Kansas Jayhawks where the Jackrabbits fell 1-0. SDSU is currently on a three-game winning streak heading into conference play.
SDSU has three players with three goals each on the season. As a team they have scored 22 goals thus far and only given up seven.
The Jackrabbits were picked the finish second in the 2025 Summit League Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Sophomore Hille Christensen and senior Lauren Eckerle were picked as Summit League players to watch.
The Jackrabbits are led by Brock Thompson who is in his ninth season at the helm of the program. Thompson previously spent nine years as an assistant at SDSU.
Scouting the Coyotes
The Coyotes currently hold a 4-2-4 overall record through the non-conference portion of the 2025 season.
Redshirt freshman Klarissa Vega leads the Coyotes with six goals and one assist.
South Dakota was picked to finish sixth in the 2025 Summit League Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll. Graduate student Ashby Johnson and junior Mail Van Meeteren were named Summit League players to watch.
Head coach Michael Thomas has entered his eighth season at the head of the Coyotes program.
Up Next
After the South Dakota road trip the Tommies will return to South Field for the first home conference match-up on Oct. 5th versus Omaha. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT.
